PP/PP/PP type battery separator
Advantages:
For ABA 3-layer PP co-extruder separator structure, the molecular weights are different from A to B. In this structure, the micropores are relatively larger at the top and bottom, and relatively smaller in the middle, so lithium ions are easier to pass through. It results as less self-discharge and better rate capability.
Good chemical stability and not prone to reacting with the chemicals in the battery.
Relatively high melting point and can maintain good structural stability in high-temperature environments.
Relatively low cost.
Disadvantages:
Compared to the PE material, the flexibility of PP may be slightly poorer. So major manufacturers push raw material manufacturer to improve the PP material with higher cost.
Above all, this technology has been improving all the time. The overall performance of latest generation is even better than PP/PE/PP type battery separator.
PP/PE/PP type battery separator
Advantages:
It combines the high strength and heat resistance of PP and the good flexibility and pore-closing characteristics of PE.
It can better adapt to the changes of the battery under different working conditions, especially when the temperature changes greatly, the pore-closing performance of PE helps to improve the safety of the battery.
Disadvantages: • This structure is protected by a patent from one company. You might not get the approval to produce it, or you might need to pay a high cost for the approval due to the patent.
The manufacturing process is relatively complex, and the cost is higher.
Due to the multi-layer composite structure, there may be a potential risk of interlayer separation in the long-term use process.
Compared to the pure PP separator, its air permeability and other properties may require more fine-tuning.
